FURTHERWICK Park School closed its doors for the final time nine years ago, but these snaps from the Echo archive show just how popular it was in the 1990s.

The Canvey school welcomed countless talented youngsters for more than 50 years, but dwindling pupil numbers on the island meant children were instead sent to Cornelius Vermuyden and Castle View schools.

Known as “our community school”, pupils got involved in numerous fun productions, which allowed them to bring out their creative and theatrical side.

Foreign trips, including to the Seychelles, were also popular with the pupils, while fundraising events were held to help the community.

Pupils at the school, which was based on Furtherwick Road, were pushed by teachers to get the high grades they deserved.
