FIRE crews have been joined by other emergency teams at the scene of "an incident involving a storage facility".

Smoke billowed from the roof of the building this afternoon as firefighters worked to extinguish a blaze at Littlehampton Marina.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service issued a statement on the incident at 1.20pm as crews attended the scene in Ferry Road.

A spokesman for the service said: "We currently have four fire engines at an incident involving a storage facility in Ferry Road, Littlehampton.

"We are working with other emergency services at the scene. More updates to follow."

At 2.40pm, the fire service provided an update.

The spokesman said: "Our firefighters from Littlehampton, East Preston and Bognor used a hose reel, a jet and a fog nail to extinguish this fire before using a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no remaining hotspots.

"The incident is now being scaled back, and we just have one appliance from Littlehampton and East Preston at the scene.

Adur and Worthing Police were also called to assist fire crews in dealing with the incident.

Officers have launched an investigation into the incident and remain at the scene, which has been cordoned off.

A force spokesman said: "We are currently responding to an incident at a storage facility in Ferry Road, Littlehampton, where a small fire occurred.

"The scene has been cordoned off while investigations are carried out.

"We will provide more information as soon as we are able to."

The South East Coast Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.
