Road police said they intercepted the driver of a white van for drunk driving after posting footage of a hair-raising chase on the M25 motorway.

The footage of the chase, in which a white van is seen swerving dangerously across lanes on the M25, was posted by Surrey Roads Policing Unit (RPU) on Saturday (October 24).

It garnered tens of thousands of views on Twitter, and also depicted police cars giving chase to the white van driver who seemed to drive at speed away from the pursuing police cars in the footage initially.

A spokesperson for Surrey RPU said the video highlighted how bad one's driving is while drunk.

They also revealed that the driver had been "3.5 times" over the legal limit, which in England is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, and 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine.

"Over 3.5 times the drink driving limit - this is how bad your driving is.

"The moment we intercepted a very drunk driver on the M25," Surrey RPU said.

Surrey Police tweeted around two minutes of footage, which showed the van did eventually start to slow down.

A force spokesman said James Aarron Mantel, 44, of Ape Field Road, Erith has been charged with driving a motor vehicle while above the alcohol limit and is due to appear at Guildford Magistrates’ Court on November 23.
