IT’S a moment he will never forget.

Former Clock Face Miners junior Josh Eaves scored his first senior try for St Helens in the Super League clash with Salford Red Devils at Headingley last night.

It marked the 23-year-old hooker’s first start in the red vee too, having made two previous appearances off the bench.

Scoring your first try is a special moment for a player and looking at these brilliant Bernard Platt pictures he was absolutely thrilled.

The try came on the back of some sterling work by two of the few seasoned campaigners in the Saints line-up.

Loose forward James Graham kept the ball alive with an offload and then back-rower Dom Peyroux dodged and weaved through the Salford defence after cutting inside from a drop-off pass.

Eaves stayed with him in support and gleefully received the perfectly executed pass for Peyroux to speed his way to the line and dive over.

Hopefully it will be the first of many for the homegrown talent.

It’s a tough gig competing for the number 9 shirt with James Roby and Aaron Smith, but he surely did his future selection chances no harm at all with a smart and industrious display in the 12-10 loss.

Eaves, who has been with the club since he was 14, was part of the unbeaten Academy Championship side in 2016 and spent 2018 on dual registration with Whitehaven Warriors, for whom he made 23 appearances.

He made his Saints debut in a defeat to London Broncos last year.
