A WORKER suffered burns after a fire broke out at a leisure centre.

The Triangle Leisure Centre in Burgess Hill was evacuated this morning after the blaze broke out in a boiler room.

The injured man was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton for treatment.

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to assist other emergency services responding to a report of a fire in a boiler room at the Triangle Leisure Centre, Burgess Hill, at 10.30am.

“A workman suffered burns and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

“The centre was safely evacuated and no one else was hurt. Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”

One family told The Argus they had arrived at the leisure centre at 11am this morning to go swimming, but found the site was closed and there was a large number of police cars and fire engines stationed outside.

In a statement on social media, The Triangle Leisure Centre said: “The centre is closed until further notice. If you have an existing booking, this will be automatically cancelled.

“Please keep a look out here and on our website for updates. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service sent three engines to the scene to battle the blaze.

Teams were able to extinguish the flames and, after damping down and using a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no further signs of fire, they left the scene at 12.33pm.

The fire is believed to have started accidentally.
