PEOPLE have launched a petition calling for greater speed restrictions in Arundel Road in Peacehaven following a series of accidents.

Paul Wylie and Molly Hoy started the petition after the pair, alongside their three-year-old daughter, witnessed a neighbour’s cat get run over and killed by a car.

They said their daughter has cried “every night” since witnessing the incident on Friday, October 23.

Molly said: “It was horrific, it was absolutely horrendous.

“It was at a time when the local nursery were exiting, we have a three-year-old daughter and it quite easily could have been a child.”

Molly and Paul say there have also been several other incidents along Arundel Road, including a car crashing into their neighbour’s front porch.

Paul works for a theatre company, employed by Transport for London, that teaches road safety to children through theatre and education. He wants Peacehaven Town Council and East Sussex County Council to investigate the issue and find a suitable road safety solution.

The road currently has a 30-mile speed limit and give-way measures in place. However the 47-year-old believes the restrictions are not enough.

Paul said: “We’ve been concerned about this for a while, there are a lot of families with children and the road is just getting worse and worse and worse. There are so many people speeding and it is very much used as a rat-run for the coast road.”

East Sussex County Council said they would “consider” the petition however their “resources are limited. A spokesman said: “We are happy to consider suggestions for road safety improvements at individual locations, although the fact we have very limited resources means we can only implement those schemes where the need is greatest.”

Peacehaven town clerk, Tony Allen, said he has been “actively engaged” with residents to seek “urgent improvements” to make Arundel Road safer, but they are limited by “funding and manpower.”

Mr Allen said: “With the help of residents, the town council has identified measures for Arundel Road, which include a speed limit reduction, parking restrictions and a reduced weight limit for this road. Realisation of these measures is of course dependant on securing the appropriate funding.”
