AN EXPERT bomb disposal squad was called to a beach after explosives were found on a beach.
Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team was called to Medmerry Beach in West Sussex over the ordnance found on Monday.
The beach was cordoned off to the public, and said the ordnance found at the beach was “highly explosive”.
A team from the Ministry of Defence’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were called in and blew up the ordnance found there in a controlled explosion.
The coastguard team said: “We were paged to reports of ordnance at Medmerry Beach.
“A search of the beach was carried out, and several pieces of ordnance were located, photographed and a cordon was put in place and the beach was closed.
“Photos were sent to our operations centre and passed to EOD.”
The team said the EOD arrived later in the day after the tide had gone out, and the ordnance was found again.
“The EOD arrived on scene and carried out a controlled explosion just after 12pm and the beach was reopened.”
