A DEAD porpoise was found on a beach.
Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team attended West Beach in Selsey at about 3pm yesterday following reports the animal had been found on the shingle.
Crews took the porpoise's measurements and recorded details about it before sending this data to the coastguard operations centre and the National History Museum.
Solent Coastguard is now arranging for the animal to be recovered from the beach.
A Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Dolphins, porpoises and whales are all protected under the Royal Fish laws of the United Kingdom and HM Coastguard undertakes duties on behalf of the receiver of the wreck to record details of Royal Fish that have washed ashore.
"Dead mammals can be full of dangerous toxins and other things, so please stay away and keep your dogs on a lead to prevent them coming into contact with them.
"If you come across a Royal Fish washed up on the beach, please call the copastguard."
