An 'Uzi' sub-machine gun was uncovered by police in a search of a parked car in South London yesterday (Monday, November 16).

Detectives from the Met Police's Specialist Crime Proactive Syndicates said they had uncovered the weapon inside a vehicle on Appach Road in Brixton.

The vehicle was seized and found to be stolen.

Meanwhile, a bag inside found by officers returned the Uzi — an Israeli-made submachine gun — plus ammunition and a silencer.

Detective Superintendent Steve Ellen, from Specialist Crime South, described the find as a "significant recovery":

"A loaded machine gun has been taken off the streets thanks to the ongoing work of our officers tackling gang violence in the capital," he said.

“Our investigation is in its early stages but we will be working to establish who left the firearm in the vehicle and whether it has been used in any criminality.

"I would encourage anyone with information about violent crime to contact police or Crimestoppers," DS Ellen added.
