A SPRIGHTLY and strong-stomached care home resident has said it’s amazing how time flies after celebrating a landmark birthday with a themed bash.

Marjorie Wood, who has lived at New Copford Place, Colchester, for nearly seven years, marked her 101st birthday with a special pink and white party.

The proud mother to Peter and Yvonne, who has five grandchildren and five great grandchildren, also enjoyed a delicious home-made afternoon high tea.

While revelling in a range of scrumptious cakes which were laid on by dedicated care home staff, she also grooved along to her favourite wartime songs.

“I was in my 20s during the Second World War and have many fond memories of the dances I went to and songs that were around then,” said Marjorie.

“I particularly like the Lambeth Walk, it’s a great tune.

“I’m so lucky, the care home team went to so much trouble to make my 101st birthday so lovely and special.

“I didn’t think anything could top my 100th birthday but this has definitely come close. I’ve had a wonderful time.”

Music-loving Marjorie, who married Dick Wood in 1948, was born in south London shortly after the Treaty of Versailles was signed following the end of the First World War.

By the time the Second World War came around, Marjorie found herself helping those injured in areas devastated by terrifying bombings.

She said: “So much has changed in the world during my 101 years.

“When I think back to working in our Tooting pharmacy, it really shows how times have changed.

“I remember during the war my boss Eddie and I accidentally became novice nurses as people would come in with pieces of glass in their eyes due to the bombing raids.

“I used to help Eddie take the shards out as nobody else at the pharmacy had the stomach for it.”

According to fashionista Marjorie, who used to love making dresses, that is not the only thing which has changed.

“Shopping for clothes has changed so much too,” she added.

“I used to love making my own dresses, I really enjoyed that.

“I also used to make my son’s trousers. I made them without zip, not like how it is done today”

Marjorie, who was born the year after the influenza pandemic swept across the globe, remains astounded by how fast the years have whizzed by.

“I remember reading Eva Perón, Nat King Cole, Sir Edmund Hillary and even Dr Who Jon Pertwee, were born the same year as me - so I’m in good company,” she added.

“It’s amazing how time really does fly.”
