SPECIALIST bomb disposal experts detonated an unexploded grenade discovered in Colchester.

It was pulled from Bourne Pond in the Bourne Road area at around 5.15pm on Sunday.

A cordon was put in place around the area.

Police said the grenade needed to be dealt with safely and an Army bomb disposal unit was due to carry out a controlled explosion at around 11.10pm.

A spokesman said: "This may cause a loud noise and may cause some worry, but we don’t want people living nearby to be concerned.

"We’re asking that residents keep clear from the area though for their own safety.

"We appreciate this is taking place late on a Sunday night but it’s important the grenade is made safe.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding."
