BRIGHTON and Hove has the 276th lowest weekly coronavirus rate of the 315 local authority areas listed in England, the latest data shows.

This comes after a drop in the number of cases recorded in the city in the seven days leading up to November 19, when compared with the figure from the week before.

New figures from Public Health England show there were 300 positive tests reported in Brighton and Hove between November 12 and 19, giving the city a weekly rate of 103.1 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from the 521 cases confirmed in the city during the previous week, which gave a seven-day rolling rate of 179.1 cases per 100,000 people.

Hull has the highest rate in England, with 1,477 new cases recorded in the seven days to November 19 – the equivalent of 568.6 cases per 100,000 people.

Swale in Kent has the second highest rate at 565, with 848 new cases, and Thanet is third with a rate of 508, the result of 721 new weekly cases.

The area of Sussex with the highest weekly coronavirus rate in the latest figures is Wealden.

There were 266 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the area in the seven days leading up to November 19, giving it a rate of 164.7.

This rate makes it the area of the UK with the 183rd highest weekly rate, and marks a rise from the 112.1 cases per 100,000 people recorded the week before.

Eastbourne is the area of Sussex with the next highest figure - 168 new cases giving it a rate of 161.9 per 100,000 people.

Mid Sussex (204th), Rother (225th), Hastings (256th), Chichester (259th), Arun (261st) and Horsham (275th) were the other areas of Sussex to record higher weekly rates than Brighton and Hove.

Lewes (282nd), Crawley (283rd), Adur (300th) and Worthing (302nd) were all at the tail-end of the table.

The figures, for the seven days to November 19, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (November 20-23) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
