AN MP says it is "disappointing" that Brighton and Hove will be under Tier 2 restrictions once lockdown ends.

MP for Kemptown and Peacehaven Lloyd Russell-Moyle said he was "not surprised" that the area had been placed into the second-highest Tier.

As a result of being placed on "high alert", people in the city will not be able to mix with other households in any indoor setting.

The Labour MP said: "I am not surprised, of course, it will be disappointing but the vast majority of the country are in Tier 2 with some parts of the country in Tier 3.

"Only very few parts are in Tier 1. This will allow some hospitality but understand why many places will be disappointed about this.

"I hope that it will mean we can enjoy some activities in our bars and restaurants over the Christmas period.

"I wasn't expecting us to be in tier one this time but I do hope we can move to tier one or abolish the tiers early in the new year."

The measures mean alcohol may only be served in hospitality settings as part of a substantial meal.

Last orders will be taken at 10pm before being forced to close at 11pm.

Residents will be asked to avoid travel to tier three areas and large events will be allowed with a limited audience.

Hove and Portslade MP Peter Kyle said Tier 2 was the "safest option" for the city.

He said: "‘In the circumstances to which we’ve been led, this is the safest option for our city. But if we’d had the circuit-break option when it was advised we’d have a different starting point.

"I profoundly regret that we’re in this position, I believe it was avoidable, but this week people in our area have died from this virus and we must act with extreme caution and personal responsibility."
