A ROCK legend’s views on who he thinks are the greatest guitarists of all time has been revealed.

David Gilmour is widely regarded as one of the world’s top living rock musicians for his career playing in Pink Floyd and in his solo career.

The 74-year-old, who is moving into a multi-million pound new home on Hove seafront with his wife Polly Samson, 58, has cited rock ‘n’ roll greats as being some of his biggest influences.

Now Far Out magazine has compiled some of his interviews and revealed who Mr Gilmour believes are some of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Musicians including Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix are perhaps the obvious choices of who he thinks are the greatest of all time. But readers may be surprised to know who else has been included on the list of 12 that the magazine has compiled.

The Argus:

It includes Jeff Beck, who lives in Wadhurst, Sussex, and was one of the three guitarists to have played in The Yardbirds, as well as Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

The Argus:

Previously Mr Gilmour was asked who had inspired him, and replied: “So many players inspired me. I learned from Pete Seeger, Hank Marvin, Lead Belly, Joni Mitchell, John Fahey, Roy Buchanan, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton and dozens more.

“I copied – don’t be afraid to copy – and eventually something that I suppose that I would call my own appeared.”

The Argus:

He told Uncut magazine: “Trying to be too original when you’re too young is possibly not the best thing.”

Mr Gilmour was previously voted as the greatest Fender guitar player of all time, but says fans’ thoughts on who is the best can change over time, and a new vote might be won by Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix.

The influence of former Pink Floyd guitarist Syd Barrett, who Mr Gilmour replaced in 1968, was also noteworthy, as the pair often played together to earn enough money to live while busking.

The 12 guitarists Far Out magazine identified as influencing Mr Gilmour were: Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Chuck Berry, George Harrison, Joni Mitchell, Hank Marvin, Pete Seeger, John Fahey, Roy Buchanan, Lead Belly, and Syd Barrett
