TWO more performances of a popular opera have been scheduled after a theatre was forced to close due to the November lockdown measures to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Glyndebourne Opera House is set to reopen its doors in December for two extra performances of its semi-staged production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Tickets for the two additional performances go on sale tomorrow, and are priced between £40 and £60.

The 90-minute cut-down version of The Magic Flute will be performed in English and is directed by Donna Stirrup, with Leo McFall conducting the Glyndebourne Tour Orchestra.

Composed just months before his death, Mozart’s final stage work is described as “a musical masterpiece” that reimagines opera for the Age Of Enlightenment.

Two performances will take place at 4pm next Wednesday, December 9 and Thursday December 10.

Also taking place at Glyndebourne next month is a one-off concert of music by much-loved composers Beethoven and Brahms performed by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, which is being conducted by the renowned Sir Mark Elder.

‌A ‌new‌ ‌production‌ ‌of‌ ‌Beethoven’s‌ ‌Fidelio had been planned for the Glyndebourne Festival this year.

As the festival could not take place, for this‌ ‌concert the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment will put together ‌orchestral‌ ‌music‌ ‌and‌ ‌arias‌ ‌from‌ ‌the‌ ‌opera with Brahms‌‘ ‌violin‌ ‌concerto‌ ‌played‌ ‌by‌ rising young‌ ‌star Alina‌ ‌Ibragimova.

The performance is on Friday.

A series of Christmas concerts are also scheduled to get people feeling festive as Christmas approaches.

The concerts will include opera highlights and a series of Yuletide classics, showcasing the talents of the Glyndebourne Chorus and Glyndebourne Tour Orchestra conducted by Aidan Oliver.

Performances are scheduled at 3pm on on Saturday, December 5, Sunday December 6 and Sunday December 13.

One concert is also scheduled for Saturday, December 12 at 7pm, and tickets are priced between £35 and £50.

And to keep opera fans entertained at home over Christmas and New Year, Glyndebourne will also share a free stream of Peter Hall’s renowned production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola.

It will be available to watch on Glyndebourne’s website and YouTube channel.
