TWO universities have launched their mass testing programmes before students travel home for Christmas.

The University of Sussex and the University of Brighton have opened temporary testing sites where students will be tested for Covid before they leave.

Tests are voluntary, however students are “strongly encouraged” to take part in the scheme.

If they test negative, students will leave in the “travel window” starting from Thursday, December 3.

Both universities are working with NHS track and trace to provide the tests.

The mass testing is aimed at reducing the risk of spreading coronavirus as students go home for the winter break.

Adam Tickell, vice-chancellor of the University of Sussex, said: “The vast majority of students want to do the right thing and we are determined to provide this peace of mind for them before they travel home at the end of a tough year.

“We have been working incredibly hard with government and public health officials to get ready for testing to begin and we are confident that we can provide this for any Sussex student who wants it.

“This is the perfect opportunity for our community to come together as we look ahead with hope to the new year.”

Tests will be available for students without symptoms, who may be infectious but unaware, with results available within 45 minutes.

They will be required to take two tests over a four-day period.

Anyone who tests positive in their first test is being asked to take a second test, which will be processed in a laboratory.

If the second test also returns a positive result, they will have to self-isolate for ten days, which will still allow them enough time to get home before Christmas.

Michelle Donelan, Universities Minister, said: “We are committed to get students back to their loved ones for the Christmas holidays as safely as possible, after this challenging year.

“Our plans already minimise the risk of students moving at the end of term, through staggered departure dates in the ‘student travel window’.

“But testing will offer further assurances that students can keep their families safe this winter and I urge all students who can to take the tests on offer.”

The Sport Centre at the University of Sussex’s Falmer campus will used as a testing centre.

Students at the University of Brighton will be able to access a test at the Varley Park Halls of Residence in Coldean Road, Brighton, the city campus in Edward Street or at the Gaudick Gym in Eastbourne.

Students are advised to book travel in advance, avoid busy times and routes and check their journey in advance.

If driving, students have been told to only travel with members of their household, or support bubble.
