BRIGHTON and Hove has the 290th lowest weekly coronavirus rate of the 315 local authority areas listed in England, the latest data shows.

This comes after a drop in the number of cases recorded in the city in recent weeks.

Worthing may have made headlines today for having the third lowest weekly coronavirus rate in England in the latest data, but the Brighton and Hove figure also continues to fall.

The city recorded a weekly rate of 59.5 new cases per 100,000 population in the seven days leading up to November 27, down from 103.1 recorded in the week leading up to November 19 and 178.4 reported in the week before this.

Cornwall and the Isle of Scillies, and the Isle of Wight, are the only two areas of England to be placed in Tier 1.

They recorded weekly rates of 29.0 and 26.8 respectively in the most recent complete figures.

Meanwhile Swale in Kent (less than 80 miles away from Brighton) has the highest rate, with 835 new cases recorded in the seven days to November 27 – the equivalent of 556.4 cases per 100,000 people.

Medway – also in Kent – has the second highest rate, up from 417.5 to 521.3, with 1,452 new cases.

The local authority area in Sussex with the highest coronavirus rate is Rother, with 128 new cases per 100,000 population.

However, this still places it in the bottom half of the list of local authority areas and their coronavirus rates.

Rother has the 162nd highest rate of 315 areas in England.

Other areas of Sussex with higher rates than Brighton were Wealden (183rd with a rate of 117), Mid Sussex (234th with a rate of 92), Eastbourne (267th with a rate of 74.2), Hastings (269th with a rate of 73.4), Chichester (277th with a rate of 69.3), Lewes (279th with a rate of 66.8) and Horsham (287th with a rate of 62.6).

The local authority areas in Sussex with a weekly rate lower than Brighton and Hove were Arun (294th with a rate of 56), Adur (304th with a rate of 46.7) and Worthing (313th with a rate of 29.8).

The figures, for the seven days to November 27, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (November 28-December 1) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Here is the list of local authorities and their weekly coronavirus rates in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to November 27; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to November 27; rate of new cases in the seven days to November 20; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to November 20.
