PART of the A27 is closed after heavy rainfall overnight caused flooding on the road.
The stretch between the Ashcombe and Southerham roundabouts near Lewes is currently shut.
Sussex Roads Police officers are at the scene trying to clear blocked drains so the surface water can be removed.
A spokesman for the force said: "We have flooding on the A27 between the Ashcombe and Southerham roundabouts near Lewes this morning.
"The eastbound carriageway is currently closed.
"Our early turn team are on scene trying to clear blocked drains: we hope to have one lane open shortly."
An AA traffic report warned of disruption to drivers as a result of the road closure.
Update
At 7.35am, Sussex Roads Police confirmed that the road had been partly reopened.
A spokesman for the force said: "We've managed to get one lane of the A27 open now, so traffic should start moving. (There are) still potential delays, however."
Traffic was reported to have returned to normal by 9.30am.
