FOUR parts of Sussex have recorded some of the lowest weekly coronavirus rates in the country.

Lewes, Chichester, Adur and Worthing were all among the 15 local authority areas in England to record the fewest new cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 315 areas have submitted data.

The Argus: Worthing PierWorthing Pier

Worthing had the lowest figure in the data for the week leading up to December 3, with just 30 cases.

This means it has a weekly rate of 27.1 new cases per 100,000 people, marginally higher than the UK's only Tier 1 areas Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (25.5) and the Isle of Wight (19.8).

Adur had the next lowest with 22 new cases, giving it a weekly rate of 34.2 - the fourth lowest in England.

Chichester had 54 new cases, giving a rate of 44.6, and Lewes recorded 47 new cases, giving a rate of 45.5.

As a result, they had the 12th and 13th lowest rates in England respectively.

The Argus: LewesLewes

Crawley and Brighton and Hove were not far from the bottom 15.

Crawley had the 25th lowest rate in the country with 53.4 new cases per 100,000 people, and Brighton and Hove had the 35th lowest rate with 63.3.

The figures, for the seven days to December 3, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (December 4-7) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
