A DISQUALIFIED driver who tried to blame three motoring offences on another person has been jailed.

Carl Duncan of Colvin Gardens in Enfield was caught speeding twice and ploughed through a red light, but he tried to avoid prosecution by providing the details of a woman who was known to him to authorities.

The 61-year-old, who previously lived in Pevensey, was caught speeding in his Jaguar XF on the A22 Godstone Road in Whyteleafe, Surrey, on May 5 when he went 40mph in a 30mph zone.

His next offence came on the A215 Norwood Road in London where he drove through a red light on February 21 the following year.

Then, on August 23 2017, he was again caught breaking the speed limit, this time driving at 36mph on the A22 in East Grinstead - a 30mph zone.

For each offence, he was sent a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP).

But, responding to these, he nominated the woman known to him before intercepting her mail and admitting the offences on her behalf.

On each occasion, a retraining offer was sent to the nominated person, but a £100 fine and three points were accepted instead.

Duncan used his bank card to pay the fines.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "It was only after the woman reported a separate incident to police that these allegations came to light, and investigators were able to prosecute Duncan.

"He was subsequently interviewed and reported for summons."

Duncan pleaded guilty to three counts of perverting the course of justice at Lewes Crown Court on December 8, where he was sentenced to 255 days' imprisonment and further disqualified from driving for 24 months."
