A GUITAR signed by legendary rock band Pink Floyd is to be auctioned in the United States to support veterans and their families.

The Epiphone Les Paul has been autographed by founding member, Roger Waters, Hove resident and lead guitarist David Gilmour and drummer, Nick Mason.

The guitar has been mounted in a glass display cabinet with a custom plaque, alongside a certificate of authenticity.

Auction sponsors, American radio station QFM96, described the guitar as “a one-of-a-kind authentic piece of rock memorabilia.”

And for Pink Floyd fans it is hard to deny its significance, as the instrument boasts the signatures of feuding members, Gilmour and Waters.

The 1983 album, The Final Cut, was the group’s final studio album and the last they would release with main songwriter Roger Waters still as a member.

The years that followed were marked by turmoil, a lawsuit with Waters, battles over song rights and doubts as to whether the band could legally continue to exist without him.

After eventually regrouping under the leadership of Gilmour, plus Mason and keyboardist Rick Wright, the band released new material and embarked on a world tour.

The guitar has currently received nine bids, with the highest bid standing at 2,210 dollars.

However, it is likely the guitar will eventually be auctioned for significantly more, after previous instruments signed by Gilmour at auction have sold for more than £16 million.

Last year, the legendary rock star put 126 of his guitars under the hammer with all the proceeds going to Client Earth, a charity which uses law to protect people and the planet.

The most notable guitar to go under the hammer at Christie’s in New York was the black Stratocaster Gilmour used to record Comfortably Numb, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Money, according to Guitar World.

It was purchased by the owner of American football team Indianapolis Colts, Jim Isray, who spent almost four million dollars on Gilmour’s signature guitar.

All the proceeds from the current auction will go to the Red, White and Q fund, an American charity that supports local veterans, active service members, first responders, and their families.

The auction closes on December, 31 with the funds raised going directly to the charity.
