STORM Bella is set to hit Brighton on Boxing Day bringing with it winds of more than 60mph.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning across the city from 10pm on Saturday to 9am on Sunday.

An amber warning is the second highest alert the weather service can issue, meaning experts predict there will be an "increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather".

The warning spans the south coast of England, as well as the south coast of Wales.

In Brighton, the highest winds are expected to hit shortly after mignight on Boxing Day, with wind gust speeds of up to 61mph.

The Met Office website states: "Storm Bella will bring disruption to travel and utilities over parts of south and south east England, and south Wales.

"Longer journey times and cancellations are likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected.

"Some roads and bridges are likely to close, and there will probably be some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs.

"Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown on to coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.

"There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage."
