A BIG-HEARTED charity in Halstead has been given a boost of almost £2,500.

The Halstead Day Centre, in Bridge Street, supports elderly residents and looks to tackle loneliness in the community.

Now the charity has been handed a cash boost during tough times brought on by the pandemic courtesy of former town mayor Andrew Munday.

As mayor, he was able to raise thousands through the Mayor’s Charity Funds with events such as the Christmas torchlight procession.

Mr Munday selected the day centre to be his chosen charity during his time in office.

After delays caused by the pandemic, he was finally able to hand over a cheque for £2,490.

A spokesman for Mr Munday said: “With the interruption of Covid-19 at the end of Councillor Munday’s term as mayor, he was finally able to present his mayor’s charity fundraising funds to the Halstead Day Centre, his chosen charity for 2019-2020.

“A cheque for £2,490 was presented to Veronica Harman, the manager of the Halstead Day Centre.

“These funds were raised through the torchlight procession and other civic receptions, the Christmas raffle run by the chamber of trade, the Beavers band charity night, and a £750 donation by Linda Smith, the organiser of the Halstead Summer Fayre.

“Mr Munday would like to thank everyone for their support for the Mayor’s charity and is very pleased to have been able to raise such a large amount of money for such a worthwhile and deserving cause.”
