A FIRE broke out at an industrial building late last night.

Emergency teams were called to the scene in Faraday Close, Eastbourne, shortly before 11.30pm.

The property where the fire had taken hold was being used as a vehicle rental building.

Four engines from stations across East Sussex were sent to the site along with three fire officers, and crews were able to extinguish the blaze.

There were no reports of injuries.

Following an investigation today, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) said the fire was being treated as accidental.

It was discovered that it had been caused by an electrical extension lead which had not been turned off, and had been stored in a coiled position.

ESFRS issued a reminder to all businesses to follow safety measures to prevent fires at their workplaces.

These are to:

  • Ensure you have an up to date risk assessment which identifies risks and fire safety measures
  • Make sure these measures are put in place and reviewed on a regular basis
  • Ensure all staff are trained in how to prevent a fire and what to do if there is an emergency
  • Isolate electrics and appliances, especially if you have had to reduce opening hours or close due to Covid-19
