IT HAS been a difficult year and there is no doubt many will have celebrated turning their back on 2020.

According to new research, residents in Brighton and Hove are among the most likely to be nursing a New Year’s Day hangover today.

Supplement brand YourZooki took to Google search data to find out how many people in each UK city were searching for the term “hangover cures” per year.

Brighton ranks fourth with 1,080 annual searches, equal to 7.77 people searching for hangover cures per 1000 of the population.

Newcastle topped the list with Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow accompanying Brighton in the top five.

Nutrionist Amanda Callenburg said a balanced meal before you begin drinking, ensuring you drink plenty of water, replacing lost nutrients and a hearty breakfast the morning after can all help to lessen a hangover.

She said: “Although alcohol is perfectly safe to enjoy in moderate amounts, it does contain the toxic chemical ethanol, a diuretic which means it helps our body to get rid of fluids.

"When we become severely dehydrated our bodies can’t remove these toxins, so they stay circulating in our bodies. It is this dehydration that causes such classic hangover symptoms.”
