A number of people have been detained at a UK port after trying to get off a ferry.
Border Force and police were called to Newhaven this afternoon.
Several people were stopped at the Channel port on New Year’s Eve and are suspected of not having the right to enter the country.
They are believed to have been attempting to leave a ferry that had just arrived.
A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “This afternoon, we responded to support Border Force staff dealing with a number of people suspected of not having authority to enter the UK attempting to leave a ferry that had arrived at Newhaven Port.
“Those detained are being taken into custody by Border Force for further inquiries.”
The Home Office has not commented on the situation.
Newhaven Port offers DFDS ferry routes from the UK to locations in France including Normandy and Brittany, and destinations in the south of France.
