SUSSEX Police fined a car full of people from London after they drove to Sussex on New Year's Eve to "collect a takeaway".

A group of five people were slapped with fixed penalty notices after they were stopped by officers as they drove more than 40 miles to Brighton for food.

They were among 81 people fined in Sussex between 6pm yesterday and 3am today, with other punishable offences including gatherings of groups in public spaces and private parties.

Both London and Sussex are currently in Tier 4, meaning they face the highest existing level of coronavirus restrictions.

People in these areas are being urged by the government to "not leave your home unless you have a reasonable excuse" such as for work or education purposes.

This means people should "avoid travelling outside of your village, town or the part of a city where you live".

The government website states: "You must stay at home and not leave your Tier 4 area, other than for legally permitted reasons."

Collecting a takeaway is not listed among the "legally permitted reasons".

These are:

  • Travelling to work where you cannot work from home
  • Travelling to education and for caring responsibilities
  • Visiting or staying overnight with people in your support bubble, or your childcare bubble for childcare purposes
  • Attending hospital, GP and other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health
  • Providing emergency assistance, and to avoid injury or illness, or to escape a risk of harm (such as domestic abuse)
