VOLUNTEER lifeboat crews had a busy end to one of their busiest ever years.

RNLI teams based at Newhaven faced two further callouts on New Year's Eve.

One was to help the Coastguard, police and Border Force to track down any suspected stowaways on board a ferry to the town.

The crew in the Y boat checked the water below the dock to make sure there were no casualties.

Border officials later made arrests on suspicion of attempting to leave the ferry and enter the UK without authority.

Later on the Newhaven crew of six on board the David and Elizabeth Acland Severn class lifeboat launched at 5.20pm.

They were called to a stricken vessel which had broken down a mile off the coast of Newhaven with three people on board.

The lifeboat crew found the boat in the darkness and towed it back to Newhaven harbour.

The RNLI said: "Newhaven's volunteer crew launched to a total of 69 call outs in 2020, making it the station’s busiest ever year."
