A TOP drag queen is joining Ru Paul and 11 other contestants in season two of the BBC show.

Joe Black says she comes from the world of cabaret, ostrich feathers and burlesque.

The 31-year-old from Brighton has been performing in venues around the world since the age of 13.

Ms Black has told fans of the BBC show to expect 1920s glamour from her performances, citing Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard and German-American actress Marlene Dietrich, among her inspirations.

She said: “Imagine you’ve found yourself in some seedy 1920s Berlin cabaret joint where we will have a dark, delicious and deviant time.

“I bring all the wonky eyebrows and eyeshadow of the traditional seaside drag with a bit of haunted glamour, I sometimes think I’m a bit too much for people, but the nans love me.

“I may look a tad harsh or strange on first glimpse, but I enjoy a ballad, and I always try to be kind and nice.

“I may look mean but I’m full of love.”

While Joe said she that she would love to be crowned the UK’s next Drag Race superstar, her ultimate goal is to share the joy of drag.

She said: “I think that drag is such a celebration of life and creativity.

“Drag for me means I can channel all of the things that I most love. Heroines, villains, cartoons, stars of the silver screen.

“Drag has given me such power and strength, I absolutely love it.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK showcases the very best of what the UK drag scene has to offer.

During the intense competition, the queens compete in weekly schallenges designed to test their drag expertise.

Their make-up skills, fashion sense, sewing abilities, comedy, singing, acting dancing skills, and of course lip sync skills will all be under close scrutiny.

Ms Black said that she is particularly looking forward to The Snatch Game which challenges the contestants’ skills at celebrity impersonation and improvisational comedy.

She said: “I’m very musical, I sing in a character voice, I play piano, but mostly I am an expert in clowning about.

I’d like to channel my inner thespian and take on an acting challenge.”

All of the queens will be assessed on their charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent with the bottom two queens being asked to lip sync for their lives.

Elizabeth Hurley, Lorraine Kelly, and Sheridan Smith will appear as celebrity guest judges.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK will be available on BBC iPlayer at 7pm on Thursday January 14.
