THE Argus has opened this online book of condolence to bring together tributes to 69-year-old Sue Addis.

The body of the Donatello Restaurant co-owner was tragically found by police yesterday evening at a house in Cedars Gardens, in the Withdean area of Brighton.

A murder investigation has been launched by Sussex Police and a 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

At a time when friends, family and loved ones may be unable to meet and pay their respects in person, this online book of condolence can act as a way for people to pay tribute to Mrs Addis.

Leave your tribute belowMy deepest condolences to all the family at this terrible time. Sue was a dear friend and mentor to me when I set up The Lane in the Lane Restaurant in Brighton, then The Zap Club and beyond. She was a shining beacon to other businesswomen in the town like myself, setting a fine example of what hard work, generosity of spirit and family teamwork can achieve. I owe her a great deal and like so many others, am devastated by her loss.

Leave your tribute belowTo sue, i used to sit on the laine when i was homeless, just outside ring. Every time sue walked by i would always say hello. Sue would stop and ask me how i am, she was a kind hearted soul and always shared her warmth, sje never walked by and ignored me. I am truly saddened with what has happened to a person who's smile and personality always made me feel human. Thank you Sue for always never ignoring me, i will sadly miss you as im sure a lot of people will. Scottish john (previous homeless person who sat in the laine). You will be missed so much.

From Sir Peter Field (submitted by Roger French on his behalf)

Leave your tribute belowI had the pleasure of knowing Sue Addis since the mid to late 1970’s when she and Pietro ran the Market Wine Bar next to my office in Market Street on the edge of the Lanes. In those days the lanes area was a small village with our own postman, our own milkman and even our own local vicar – Holy trinity Church (now Fabrica) in Ship Street. Sue was always passionate about the Lanes and many will attest to her battles to preserve and invigorate their unique character, at the same time she fought to keep them (and the city) economically vibrant. She was an astute business woman who really understood the hospitality marketplace and over the years, mostly in a very quiet way, she supported many charitable and voluntary cause she has felt equally passionate about. I particularly admired her support and concern for the homeless and lonely where for many years she supplied meals and comfort through a HALO group in Kemp Town. At the same time she supported many homeless facing charities like Brighton Housing Trust. Sadly, the whole city of Brighton & Hove have lost a dear friend and a totally committed supporter. She really was a pillar of our local community and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family at this very sad time. Peter Field Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex

From Nigel Andrew Mules

Leave your tribute belowSue Addis has given great service to the City which we hope in due course will be formally recognised. Numerous organisations; large and small, have been recipients of her generosity and support. she brought an infectious warmth and enthusiasm to a wide range of individual and community activities. These personal characteristics shared by her family helped to create the inclusive and vibrant atmosphere of her restaurants. Over the last thirty years our family has enjoyed the hospitality of Donatello's ( with occasional lapses tp Pinocchio's). A table would be found on our regular Friday evening visits. There was always a warm welcome- - especially for our grandchildren - from Robert on the door and Leo behind the counter. From time to time Sue herself would appear always with a ready smile and time for a few words of recognition and welcome. Service and enthusiasm were her watchwords. She will be sorely missed but never forgotten. From one family to another we extend our deepest sympathy to Leo, Stefano and Mikele.

From Laura Harding

Leave your tribute belowI didn't know Sue Addis personally but have met her at Brighton Racecourse many times and eaten in the family restaurant. The community has lost a well loved kind hearted lady who has touched the lives of many, Brighton's own "Lady Diana". My thoughts are with the family who must be in turmoil to lose such a wonderful person so tragically.

From Frances Lindsay-Hills

Leave your tribute belowSue was a great asset to Brighton. I had a lot of dealings with her in my business. She was always helpfull and her restaurants offered brilliant value for money and made every customer feel welcome. She was an inspiration.

From Dick Knight

Leave your tribute belowSue holds a special place in my heart, because she became a great friend of mine – and the Albion – when I persuaded her to become my first shirt sponsor back in 1997. I’ll never forget her kindness, understanding and support for the club at the time we needed it most. She knew how important the club was in this community – and that it must survive. She was so proud to see the Donatello name on the front of the Albion shirt. She’s been the club’s and my friend ever since. As a governor of Dorothy Stringer School and a former trustee of Martlets Hospice, I am also so grateful for Sue’s marvellous fundraising efforts for those organisations, and well aware of her vast amount of other charity work in our city over the years. She will be a huge loss to the community. I send my deepest sympathy to Pietro, Leo, Mikele and Stefano

From Chris Bowers, on behalf of the Social Liberal Forum

Leave your tribute belowWe in the Social Liberal Forum are shocked not just at Sue's loss but at the violent way in which it happened. Truly a double-tragedy. We held dinners at Donatello's during the Liberal Democrat conference, and she was always very quick to grasp what we needed and was extremely helpful over accommodating our members with mobility handicaps. When Covid is tamed and we can meet in groups again, we would love to come back to Donatello's and have another dinner where we can toast Sue's memory.

From Arthur spence

Leave your tribute belowA true pillar of the community a lovely lady such a sad loss

From Liza Tong

Leave your tribute belowOn behalf of Peacehaven based volunteers of the Marina Drive soup run for homeless people we offer our deepest condolences to Sue’s family and friends. We will be forever grateful for the hugely generous and thoughtful support Sue, through Donatellos provided to the homeless community of Brighton. This support was not just a once off gift but we were able to provide soup to - at times over 30 people a night for over 20 years, every single day. Donatellos never failed to provide this hugely important meal, which was often the only time some of our homeless community would be able to access hot food. Remarkable and inspirational was the way in which Donatellos have never made their generosity to charity public, or used this for their own benefit. There is truly another angel in heaven, rest in peace Sue

From William St John Barry

Leave your tribute belowSue what a truly lovely lady warm wise compassionate, combining bringing up your boys with building up your wonderful restaurants, you did so much to help anyone and everyone an Brighton has now in such tragic circumstances lost a very loved friend and a much respected lady. You will be missed by so many and I sincerely hope that given the passage of time the council and the community will find a suitable way to commemorate your long tireless history of support for the Arts and even more importantly for the vulnerable and marginalised in our beloved Brighton. God bless you Sue.

From David Rumack

You have always been such a driving force for the Lanes and have organised so much. You have worked so hard raising money and helping others. I have such great memories eating at Donatellos with my family that I have also passed on to my own children, especially at Christmas time when it’s always been so magical. Leave your tribute belowThis is such sad news. Sue was an incredibly hardworking and dedicated person. She was one of the most influential members of the business community, especially in the Lanes, achieving so much good for Brighton & Hove. I'll always have fond memories of Sue, from birthday parties in the restaurants when I was much younger, to working closely with her and colleagues on regeneration projects in Brighton Lanes. From Tijana Topalovic Best

Leave your tribute belowI am very saddened by these news and this lady leaving us in such a cruel way. When I was 22 years old, this was just over 15 years ago, I met Sue Addis as one of the patrons of the Theatre Royal Brighton. To me - Sue Addis was an absolute legend of a human, she was a supporter of the arts and theatres and projects in Brighton. Silent supporter all around. She was an inspiration, strong ‘old school’, independent, strict, business like (respect worthy fully🙏🏻) and sharp woman, but simultaneously sophisticated, and rich but extremely approachable and down to earth person too. I remember one time at the TRB, when the sold out ‘Traces’ performed, the touring company founder (cool dude) challenged me to get the ATG to pay for the dinner (not just after-show/cast drinks) for performers (they will be famished and want food, not drinks after show). I went to the Pinocchio's and Sue was there. She saw the show the night before (press/members night), and when I told her about the challenge, she didn’t even blink, she just said bring them all in. So I did. I did sign a bill for the food (as the TRB/ATG had an ongoing tab) and drinks after Sue left. The ATG, or the the Royal never got charged for that eve. She just probably just ripped that receipt... She did more stuff like that when I was present many of times. ... Mrs Sue Addis, she always treated people around her like, well persons and actual people. At least I always had that impression (and a gut feeling too) about her. Thank you for being a bright spark in the influential and powerful sea of Brighton, and for not shying away from being just one of us too. My honest condolences to Pieter and her sons, as well as to the family and friends. May the ground above be light, and the sky on a hands reach. May your soul travel peacefully. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

From Victoria Garcia

Leave your tribute belowReally shocked and deeply saddened by the news. She was incredibly generous, deeply caring and considerably kind. On top of that she was great fun too. A truly great Brightonian who did so much for so many within the community. Some publicly known but generally she very quietly helped and supported so many people, multiple groups and organisations. I can't believe she has gone. Deepest condolences and respect to all the family.

From Jan Doyle / The Doyle Family.

Leave your tribute belowSue was an incredible ambassador for the City’s business community and a great supporter of the City’s voluntary and charity sector. Personal testimonies to her generosity of spirit as well as her incredible fundraising will be her lasting and exemplary legacy for our city community and for the Donatello family name. A great host, a tour de force for positivism and action, a supporter of those who give of their time, talent and money for good causes, Sue will be greatly missed by us all. May she Rest In Peace.

From Chris and Rich

Leave your tribute belowThis is truly so very tragic, words fail reading this. From Community contributor

Leave your tribute belowI remember meeting Sue in 2014 when she very kindly let me exhibit my paintings at Donatello's. She then very generously offered to buy three of them, one of Pinocchio's and a couple of Donatello; a percentage of the proceeds went to BHT as Sue was always a great supporter of local charities. I remember her as a very kind, helpful and nothing was too much trouble sort of person and extremely hardworking. I feel honoured to have met her. The news comes as a terrible shock and my thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very sad time.

I’ve known Sue from the time that the old St Anne's Day building was closed after an arson attack and Sue offered to provide the Souprun with their minestrone every evening thereafter, which continued until the March 2020 Covid lockdown. And she’s been a friend of St Anne’s for even longer, paying for much of our kitchen equipment when we moved after the fire, providing feasts for our special St Anne’s days every summer and Christmas. Unbelievable thing to happen to such a wonderful person. Please pray for her and her family.

From Alan Wares

Leave your tribute belowAwful news. This has genuinely shocked me. Everyone in Brighton knows Donatello's, and every Albion fan of a certain vintage will know of their ongoing support for the club. Donatello's is a much 'Brighton' as the Palace Pier and the Pavilion. When I first approached her about doing the Guy Butters Appreciation do, she couldn't do enough for us. By her own admission, she didn't know anything about football - "oh, I leave that to the boys...', but her generosity of time and spirit helped the evening go very smoothly. Sue was a massive part of the Brighton business scene for more years than I can remember, and this is a sad day for the city Brighton & Hove.

From Caroline Lucas MP

Leave your tribute belowI just loved Sue. Funny, gregarious and so generous. Whenever there was a charity that needed money or a campaign for the city that needed support Sue was the one to ask. How many glasses of Prosecco have I drunk with Sue plotting and planning! She gave the restaurant its feel of warmth, welcome and incredible success. Love to her sons Leo, Stefano and Mikele and their families. This is a huge loss for Brighton, but a far larger one for them. There is a terrible Sue shaped hole left in Brighton.

From Dr Glynn Jones OBE, DL

Leave your tribute belowI knew Sue Addis both personally and professionally for over 30 years and found her to be a wonderfully warm and generous person .She worked tirelessly for the Cities Charities and often used her restaurant to host her fundraising events. She was extremely generous not only in terms of the donations she personally gave to the many charities she supported but also the time she spent supporting people less fortunate than herself. She supported many Mayoral Charities in the City and was widely loved and respected by the wide range of people whose lives she touched. If Sue was attending a reception or fundraising meeting there would always be a sparkle in her eye and she radiated vitality which was infectious. She was also a wonderful wife and mother. With her tragic death, the City has lost some of its sparkle and humanity.Dr Glynn Jones former Chief Executive of Brighton and Hove City Council
