CAMBODIAN police could reopen the case of Sussex backpacker Amelia Bambridge after tests revealed drugs in her system, it has been reported.

The 21-year-old was found floating at sea in October 2019 after she was last seen at a beach party in Koh Rong.

An inquest later determined that her cause of death was “accidental drowning” but a toxicology report ordered by her family revealed the date rape drug GHB was in her system when she died.

According to the MailOnline, if the UK Government formally requests a review, officers in Comdai claim they will revisit the case.

MDMA, otherwise known as ecstasy, was also found in her body.

However, Amelia’s mother Linda Schultes, 53, believers her daughter was “spiked”, and that she would have never willingly taken the drugs.

She said: “It’s just against nature really for a mother to have to bury their child.

“It breaks my heart really because when I was down there I saw how corrupt it was and understood all these backpackers go to these islands thinking the place is safe, but it really is not at all.

“I just want answers and to know what is going on in that island and what happened to her and how that stuff got into her system.

“The UK Government should be putting pressure on them to give me some answers because it is just not fair.”

The mother-of-five from Worthing is calling on the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, to pressure Cambodian police into revisiting her daughter’s case.

Cambodian National Police spokesman lieutenant general Chhay Kim Khoeun told The Khmer Times: “I think if there is a diplomatic note requesting a review of the case to the National Police and the specialised department, we will continue to investigate the case.”

Friends grew alarmed when Amelia, who worked in Hove, vanished after being last seen at the beach party about 3am on October 24.

She was due to check out of her youth hostel at noon on Friday to leave the island later in the afternoon with a friend.

Authorities launched an intensive land, air and sea search on and around Koh Rong, joined by members of Amelia’s family including Linda, brother Harry and her father, who flew in from Vietnam.

The seven-day search ended when her body was found dozens of miles from where she vanished.

According to the MailOnline, six men were detained and questioned by police but no one was charged with a crime.
