WORK to remove a pop-up cycle lane is set to begin this week, subject to weather conditions.

The government-funded cycle lane in Upper Shoreham Road in Shoreham is one of several temporary pathways put in place to encourage cycling and provide an alternative to public transport during lockdown.

But in November West Sussex County Council announced it would be removing all temporary cycle lanes following negative feedback regarding congestion.

The removal work is expected to take two to three weeks, and delays are likely on the cycleway route.

A council spokesman said: “Where practical, the removal teams will take the opportunity to carry out any minor, unrelated work that needs doing on the highway, such as the removal of vegetation and repair of small cracks in the carriageway surface.

"This could prevent the need for future traffic management and additional inconvenience.”

The Upper Shoreham Road cycle lane had received the highest number of positive comments of all cycleway schemes.

It featured in a short film produced by the Department for Transport to highlight the benefits of the schemes, made possible through the £175 million Active Travel fund.

The council spokesman added: “We recognise the support shown by some people for the Shoreham scheme, which is why we are looking to see if a redesigned, permanent proposal can be progressed, subject to Department for Transport funding.

“Any proposal would require consultation with all stakeholders, including residents, the cycle forum, schools, emergency services and businesses. We remain committed to our long-term aims of promoting sustainable transport, as outlined in our Walking and Cycling Strategy 2016-2026.”
