AN ELDERLY man died in a serious house fire last night.

The man was confirmed dead at the scene of the incident in Bishopric, Horsham.

A second elderly man is currently in hospital for treatment to burns on his hands and smoke inhalation.

Patrolling police officers spotted the fire as they were patrolling through Horsham at 7.30pm.

They were quickly joined at the scene of the blaze by crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS), with emergency vehicles soon filling the street.

Police blocked the road as firefighters from Billingshurst, Crawley and Horsham worked to bring the flames under control.

A WSFRS spokesman took to Twitter shortly after 8pm to urge people to avoid the area as its teams continued to tame the flames.

This morning, a Sussex Police spokeswoman confirmed that a man had died in the incident.

She said: "At 7.30pm yesterday, patrolling police officers saw a house on fire in Bishopric, Horsham.

"An elderly man who was living there was sadly confirmed deceased at the scene.

"Another elderly man found at the address is being treated at hospital for some burn injuries to his hands and smoke inhalation but his condition is not assessed as life threatening.

"The incident is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious at this stage."
