I READ with great interest a letter in last Friday’s Argus Letters from Sean Hennessy. He writes about a suggestion from the city council about banning vehicles from the city centre.

Great, makes it better for pedestrians to breathe nice clean air. Everybody has to agree with that. However, let’s really think about this.

Mr Hennessy, address unknown, admits his figures of 67 to 33 is a straw figure. May I suggest that going to a real election, the figures might be different.

I can see the city councillors making another horrendous mistake, as they have regarding the cycle lanes, when some ideas were reversed, costing ratepayers a pile of money, wasting it as many councils do.

Don’t forget, the money isn’t the council’s, it is ours, the rate payers.

Now, looking at this idea of banning cars from the city centre, a good idea - well not in my opinion!

Mr Hennessy appears to be jumping for joy, simply for the idea. Good, he is entitled to his opinion.

Buses and delivery lorries, I assume, will be banned from the city centre. These vehicles in the main do not use petrol, but something a lot worse, diesel!

Perhaps these vehicles should stop at the city’s limits when bus passengers can then walk to work (when the virus allows.)

I can see lorries and vans parking on the city’s outskirts and carrying their goods to the shops etc, then carrying the empties back to their vehicles. What a ridiculous thought.

However, now being serious, there are many businesses in the city who rely on cars bringing in customers to their businesses. I assume Mr Hennessy hasn’t thought of this, or perhaps he is someone who couldn’t care, although I hope he isn’t in that group.

Last year was tough for millions of businesses and they are on the brink of going under. These people need help, not being further kicked in the gutter.

City council, think again, no more mistakes, please.
