EASTBOURNE has the highest weekly coronavirus rate of all 13 Sussex districts, the latest data shows.

There were 921 cases in the area in the seven days leading up to January 12, the most recent complete Public Health England data shows.

This gave it a rate of 887.8 new cases per 100,000 people.

Crawley had the second highest weekly coronavirus rate during this period.

Though the area reported more positive tests, 972, its rate was slightly lower due to its larger population, standing at 864.7 cases per 100,000 people.

In Brighton and Hove there were 1,679 new cases in the week leading up to January 12, giving it a rate of 577.2 cases per 100,000 population.

The rates for Eastbourne, Crawley and Brighton and Hove were all significantly lower than those recorded three days before - 996.7, 1,082.7 and 727.8 respectively.

The rate in England is currently 502.7.

Seven–day rates are expressed per 100,000 population and are calculated by dividing the seven day count by the area population and multiplying by 100,000.

Data for the most recent four days has been excluded as it is incomplete and understates the true number of cases.
