OFFICERS believe someone may have deliberately targeted a cycle lane with drawing pins.

Police have issued a warning to cyclists after it appeared that tacks were “placed” along Upper Shoreham Road lane in Shoreham.

Adur and Worthing Police said the act could cause “serious injury” and they are keen to speak to anyone with information.

Earlier this month, work began to remove the pop-up cycle lane.

The government-funded cycle is one of several temporary measures put in place to encourage cycling and provide an alternative to public transport during lockdown.

But in November West Sussex County Council announced it would be removing all temporary cycle lanes following negative feedback regarding congestion.

The removal work is expected to take two to three weeks, and delays are likely on the cycleway route.

The Argus:

Cycling campaigners Shoreham-By-Cycle said: “West Sussex County Council has announced intends to remove the pop-up cycle lanes from Upper Shoreham Road this week.

“Despite doubling numbers of weekly cycle journeys since installation - trebling in some weeks.

“Despite nearly 30,000 cycle journeys having been recorded - in just one location on the route - since installation.

“Despite no delays to motor vehicles, as tested by West Sussex Highways staff.

“Despite a survey by Tim Loughton (East Worthing and Shoreham MP) reporting that 73.1 per cent of people using the cycle lanes felt they improved their safety.

“Despite Upper #Shoreham Road starring in a Department for Transport video showcasing the benefits of such projects.”
