A PERSON has been hit by a train between Gatwick Airport and Haywards Heath.

This is the second person to be hit by a train in Sussex in less than an hour this afternoon.

Southern Rail reported the incident at 1.25pm, just 30 minutes after confirming a person had been hit by a train between Horsham and Barnham.

A spokesman for the rail company said: "It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between Gatwick Airport and Haywards Heath.

"All lines are blocked between these stations whilst the emergency services work to deal with this incident.

"You should delay travelling until later if you can. Rail replacement buses are being organised and we will update this thread once we have further details of when they will be in operation."

"Major disruption" is expected to last until 5.30pm.

The Southern Rail spokesman said: "If you have not yet set off to the station, please travel later on today.

"If you can't delay your journey and need to travel by train now then this will take a lot longer than usual, there's major disruption between Gatwick Airport, Haywards Heath, and the south coast.

"No trains can currently move between Three Bridges station and Haywards Heath.

"The knock-on effect of the line closure means that there is a reduced train service on a number of our routes."

All lines are also blocked between Horsham and Barnham due to a person being hit by a train shortly before 1pm.

"Nearby trains are being held at stations and won't move forward until the emergency services have reopened the line.
