The Green party won a crucial by-election to prevent the Conservatives taking overall control of Brighton and Hove City Council.

Jason Kitcat, 29, of Hove, polled 749 votes in the election in Regency ward, ahead of Conservative Robert Nemeth with 397 and Labour's Delia Forester with 376.

The victory means the council has the same make-up as it did after the last elections in May, with no one party in overall control and the Conservatives dependent on support from their opponents to get decisions through.

The Conservatives have 26 seats, Labour 13, the Greens 12, the Lib Dems two and one Independent.
