THE A27 remains shut this morning after emergency services blocked off the road due to a gas leak near Chichester.

Sussex Police closed the road in both directions between the junction of the A285 at Portfield Way and the junction of the A259 at about 6pm yesterday and urged drivers to avoid the area.

An AA traffic report from 7.20am this morning warns that the road remains shut, while an update from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service tells drivers to "expect delays".

Highways England say the road will remain closed until at least noon today.

A spokesman said: "The closure is in place due to a gas leak, Southern Gas Network lead the response to this incident and have engineers on scene carrying out urgent repairs.

"The closure is expected to remain in place until at least 12 noon today (February 2)."

There are diversions in place to direct traffic around the closed section of road.
