A COUPLE was left car-less in Crawley yesterday after a bizarre sequence of events.

Police seized a car from a woman in the Southgate area of the town at about 2pm because it did not have any insurance or tax.

She called her husband to come and pick her up, but when officers checked his vehicle they found it was also without insurance and tax.

So, his car was also seized.

Crawley Police posted an image of the couple's cars, a red Kia Picanto and a silver Mercedes A170, on social media shortly after 4pm yesterday.

A caption accompanying the images included a handy tip for drivers.

It read: "When you come and pick your wife up after we seized her vehicle for no insurance, please make sure your vehicle is also insured and taxed."

Flabbergasted commenters were quick to voice their disbelief.

One said, "You just couldn’t make it up," while another added, "Words fail me".

Several were quick to see the funny side with one commenter joking: "Only in Crawley."

The minimum penalty for driving without insurance is six points and a fine, the Motoring Offence Lawyers website explains.

According to the website: "The police are able to offer fixed penalties to drivers caught driving or using a vehicle without valid insurance.

"The maximum penalty is disqualification from driving and a fine of up £5,000. In some cases a short period of disqualification may be the more preferable option particularly if the person accused is a new driver who would stand to lose their licence if given 6 penalty points."
