MOTORISTS are being urged to take care on the roads as snow and icy conditions are set to continue this week.

Yesterday The Argus reported how the so-called “Beast from the East” had arrived in Sussex.

At times there were blizzards on the beaches with a bitter easterly wind driving in icy cold showers throughout the day.

Along the cost, snow did not settle, but inland and on the hills snow did settle.

In Mid Sussex police issued a warning after being called to three crashes at the same junction.

Officers have reminded people to only be on the roads if they are making an essential journey.

The force said: "Snow is now settling and roads are very icy and treacherous.

"Please do not travel unless ESSENTIAL, and drive to the conditions."

Early on Sunday morning police and fire crews were called after a driver lost control of a car which was found upside down in a ditch in Henfield Road, Steyning.

Argus readers sent in pictures of the snow yesterday. Norma Williams shared pictures of Ashdown Forest where snow had settled.

Harry Dinnage's picture showed how areas towards the downs were more likely to have snow settling.

He pictured a number one bus on the road in Hangleton.

Brighton and Hove buses said there were no services cancelled yesterday.

Highways England chiefs said road gritters were out in force along major routes to keep them open to traffic.

Meanwhile Graham Ward pictured the snow up at Devil's Dyke.

Forecasters say there could still be more snow for Sussex today as the tail end of Storm Darcy meets freezing air coming in from the Arctic.

Amber warnings for snow remain in place in the south east of England, with more snow likely is more eastern areas.

By Tuesday there is not as much risk of snow, but temperatures will be bitterly cold. With the wind chill factor, it could feel as cold as -6 tomorrow.
