A TWO-storey cafe with panoramic harbour views is set to open at a port this summer.

The dry dock shed at Shoreham Port is being converted into Port Kitchen cafe, which will offer coffee, food and outdoor space and seating when it opens later this year.

The development will also include 1,200sqft of commercial space, and will still operate as a dry dock.

Located next to the Lady Bee Enterprise Centre, the cafe aims to serve visitors as well as the port's business community, with a modern space that "puts Shoreham Port on the map as a destination".

Port Kitchen manager Polly Child said: “We’re excited and proud to be creating a new community destination that will bring employment and vibrancy to the area at a time when hope and growth is so important.

"We will offer fantastic coffee, delicious lunches and light meals, and a modern, welcoming space for everybody to enjoy.

"Visitors will be able to watch Shoreham Port in action with panoramic views across the lock gates and out to the harbour, vessels will pass right next to our terrace.

"We’ve had so much support for the project and we can’t wait to bring our unique vision to life in 2021."

Situated next to the lock gates, Port Kitchen will be easily accessible from the A259 Albion Street, a few minutes walk away from the number 700 bus stops and Southwick railway station. Substantial bicycle storage will be provided for cyclists heading through the port.

The cafe will also operate a takeaway service kiosk for those who want to pick up a drink or snack and head back to work or straight to the beach, throughout the year.

The roof of the building will be fitted with solar panels and the team plans to build and operate the kitchen in a sustainable way, including sourcing ingredients locally.

The port, which has retained its "Eco-Port" status since 2013, is committed to fully sustainable development and aims to achieve net-zero air quality emissions by 2021 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.
