A VAN was left balancing on two wheels following an incident in a country lane.

Fire crews from Midhurst were met with the unusual sight as they responded to reports of a crash in Iping Lane, Iping, north of Chichester, at 11.41am yesterday.

One of the van's front wheels was propped up on a verge while the rear wheel diagonally opposite remained on the road, leaving it perched precariously at a 45 degree angle.

The progress of a car travelling in the opposite direction appeared to have been halted by the van.

Midhurst Fire Station shared an image of the unusual situation on social media.

In a caption accompanying the image, a spokesman for the service said: "At 11.41am, we were ordered along with Haslemere Fire Station and Chichester Fire Station to reports of a collision involving two vehicles in Iping Lane, Iping.

"Crews attended and confirmed nobody was injured.

"The incident was left with the owners (of the vehicles) and Chichester Police for recovery."

Police have been busy on the roads of Sussex over the last few days, with plummeting temperatures resulting in difficult driving conditions.

On Monday morning, after snow fell across Sussex, police closed several smaller roads around Frant, north east of Crowborough, after responding to two collisions in the area in quick succession.

A spokesman for the Sussex Police Rural Crime Team said these were "likely caused by the weather conditions".

And, on Sunday, there were three crashes at the same icy junction near West Hoathly.
