PART of an undercliff walkway is closed after passers-by were hit by falling cliff debris, it has been confirmed.

The section of the Undercliff Walk between Brighton Marina and Rottingdean remains closed today, having been shut off to pedestrians yesterday due to the risk of further rockfalls.

Sussex Police said members of the public had been hit by falling debris from the cliffs yesterday afternoon, but did not suffer injuries requiring medical attention.

Passers-by have also spotted cracks in the cliffs at Roedean.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “We were alerted by Sussex Police to a number of small rockfalls on the Undercliff Walk between Brighton Marina and Rottingdean yesterday afternoon.

“Ensuring public safety is always our top priority. We felt there was a risk of further rockfalls.

“So working with Sussex Police and HM Coastguard, we took immediate steps to close off the Undercliff Walk east of the Marina through to Rottingdean.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

"At present the section of Undercliff Walk between Brighton Marina and Rottingdean will remain closed.”

Sussex Police said: "Police assisted the local authority in closing pedestrian access beneath cliffs at Brighton Marina Village near Asda after a falls of some cliff debris shortly after 1pm on Tuesday.

"Some passers-by had been struck by debris but no injuries requiring medical attention had been reported.

"People are advised to stay away from the cliff area until further notice."

It comes after a large cliff fall was reported by Newhaven Coastguard at Seaford Head on Saturday.

Walkers have been warned to stay well away from a new crack which has appeared following the cliff fall, as the surface is unstable and cliffs are "liable to collapse without warning".

A spokesman for the Coastguard said that due to current weather, cliffs across the country are "currently very weak and fresh cracks are appearing all the time", and people are warned to avoid the bottom of cliffs as well as the cliff edges.

On Sunday, a dog was killed in a cliff fall near Newquay in Cornwall on Sunday, with the falling rubble narrowly missing its owner.

Dai Jones, Coastguard Duty Controller said: “If you’re lucky enough to live near the coast and be in a position to take your exercise there in line with Covid-19 restrictions, please do be careful near cliffs.

"Some of them are really unstable at the moment and could easily collapse.

"Stay well back, wear appropriate sturdy footwear and ensure that you check tide times and weather before setting out.

"If you or someone else is in difficulty call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
