Sussex saw temperatures drop to blisteringly cold lows last night amid continued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across the county.

Last night was recorded as the coldest in 25 years across many parts of the UK, with temperatures plunging to -22.9C at Braemar in Scotland.

Mercury dropped to as low as -4C in some areas including Shoreham in West Sussex

Yellow weather warnings for areas where wintry weather could cause travel disruption have been issued for the morning, covering the eastern half of Scotland and England including Sussex.

The Argus:

Weather warnings have been in place since Monday as a result of Storm Darcy.

The storm, dubbed the "Beast from the East 2," is the result of strong easterly winds from Ukraine and the Black Sea area.

According to the Met Office, some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

The freezing temperatures come just days after thousands across Sussex woke up to a dusting of snow, including people in Brighton.

Pictures showed the city covered in a light blanket of snow, with cars and pavements frozen.

Stunning pictures snapped high above Worthing also showed hundreds of rooftops covered from the overnight dusting.

Outlook for the rest of the week:

Icy cold weather is expected for the rest of the day with temperatures  become milder over the weekend with highs of 6C on Sunday in some parts of the county.

It will be staying most dry with some cloudy spell which clear through the day on Friday.

Saturday and Sunday will remain cloudy and cold so be sure to wrap up warm.

The Centrepoint charity for homeless youth has urged people to contact them or Streetlink on 0300 500 0914 if they see people living out in the cold.
