A DEVELOPER recently described the former M&S store in London Road, Brighton, as being past its sell-by date. He is right.

I am afraid that could also apply to much of today's London Road.

Just look at the state of Roslin's former 1930s building. It has not aged well.

Look across the road at the frontage of the former Co-op main store and headquarters. It was built in 1931 and yet all these years on it is still a great credit to the Co-op.

Many of the other shops in London Road were built in the front of people's houses. This was at the same time as trams started running along London Road (1901).

London Road is ripe for redevelopment. We are already seeing what the future will look like, with the new building on the site of the Co-op and Boots.

The drawings of the new building on the M&S site will help to start the freshening up of London Road.

There will still be plenty of shops, but there will be more people living along the road. This will help the retailers.

The future of London Road could be exciting.
