Who doesn't love a good Carry On film?

Spanning film, stage and screen the Carry On franchise was one of the most iconic of the last century releasing more than 30 movies.

Epitomising British comedy at the time, the films' humour was based around the tradition of music hall and bawdy seaside postcards - making the Sussex coastline an ideal filming location.

They were produced by Peter Rogers and directed by the great Gerald Thomas who drew on a regular pool of actors including Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Joan Sims and Barbara Windsor.

At first, due to budgeting issues, all of the Carry On films were made in and around Pinewood Studios near Iver Heath in Buckinghamshire.

But when the films started to take off and the storylines became more extravagant, the locations started being slightly further afield.

However, the franchise never quite managed to go abroad for filming - the Sahara backdrop in Carry On ... Follow That Camel was actually shot on the Sussex coast!

Here are all of the Carry On films shot in Sussex:

Carry On At Your Convenience

The 22nd film in the Carry On series, At Your Convenience was shot in 1971.

It was infamously the first box office failure of the series which suffered a few more blows later in its history, including with Carry On Girls.

Not shy of scandal, the film was held in contempt by some of its audience as it was deemed to alienate the working class.

The film attempted to explore the trade union movement but portrayed the union activists as idle, pedantic buffoons - the movie didn't return full production costs until 1976.

The plot is based around a workshy shop steward who finds himself at loggerheads with the management at a toilet factory. Much to his horror he finds out that his daughter is dating the boss's son. However, his luck changes when he discovers his budgie has a lucrative talent of tipping race horses.

Filmed all over the south of England, Carry On At Your Convenience had a few scenes in Brighton at the Palace Pier and Clarges Hotel which were both used again two years later for Carry On Girls.

The Argus:

Sid James and Barbara Windsor - The Argus

The filming for Carry On Girls took place in a few different locations across Brighton with all of the major characters coming to the city.

In the film the fictitious seaside town of Fircombe is in crisis which the councillor Sidney Fiddler, played by Sid James, is hoping to fix by holding a beauty contest.

However, the Mayor's wife, Mildred, played by Patsy Rowlands, joins feminist councillor Augusta Prodworthy's bra-burning movement and plots the downfall of the Miss Fircombe contest on the pier.

The themes of sexism, feminism and sexuality running through the film make it as relevant today as it was in the 70s and it remains just as rip-roaringly hilarious.

The Brighton filming locations included the beach, the Palace Pier and Clarges Hotel.

Some of the main cast members were; Sid James as Sidney Fiddler, Barbara Windsor as Hope Springs,  Joan Sims as Connie Philpotts and Kenneth Connor as Mayor Frederick Bumble.

Carry On ... Follow That Camel

The Argus:

Charles Hawtry, Jim Dale, Phil Silvers, Bernard Bresslaw, Kenneth Williams and Peter Butterworth with Anita Harris and Sheena the camel at Camber Sands in Follow That Camel (Argus)

The 1967 film Follow That Camel was actually released without the prefix 'Carry On' for legal reasons, however it has been lovingly called Carry On ... Follow That Camel since its release.

A parody of French Foreign Legion Films and the 1924 book Beau Geste by PC Wren, this film was used by Peter Rogers as an attempt to break into the American market.

It is about a young English aristocrat who, unjustly disgraced by accusations of cheating, joins the Foreign Legion and comes across a Bilko-like sergeant with a fort full of nervous legionnaires. With trouble brewing, the new recruit is forced to show his mettle and, hopefully, win back the heart of his lover.

Scenes set in the Sahara were filmed in the early months of 1967 at Camber Sands near Rye in East Sussex.

However shooting had to be halted several times because there was too much snow on the sands.

Some of the Carry On all-stars in the film included Kenneth Williams, Jim Dale, Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims, Peter Butterworth and Bernard Bresslaw.

Angela Douglas made her third and Anita Harris made her second Carry On appearance in Follow That Camel.
