A CARELESS driver struck a pedestrian and knocked them unconscious while they were crossing the road.

Audi driver Haroon Chaudhary hit the 29-year-old near Three Bridges railway station and then drove off without stopping.

The victim was unconscious and had to be treated in hospital for serious injuries due to the collision in Haslett Avenue East in May last year.

Police say he is lucky to be alive after the crash.

Officers traced a white Audi A3 which was abandoned in Wilmington Close nearby.

The following day hit-and-run driver Chaudhary handed himself in to police.

Crime scene investigators were called to the scene, and the area was cordoned off for hours.

Officers launched an inquiry called Operation Lichfield.

Investigating officer Sergeant Stacey Ellott said the incident unfolded at 6.10pm on May 27 last year.

The Roads Policing Unit officer said: “It is so important that drivers pay full attention when out on the road, as it only takes a momentary lapse in concentration, one poor decision, or even something unavoidable to cause a collision.

“Careless driving is one of the five most common causes of fatal and serious injuries on our roads, along with speeding, drink/drug-driving, mobile phone use and not wearing a seatbelt. These are referred to as the ‘fatal five’ offences for a reason.
