LEADING politicians have debated the council budget – which will see most people paying more money each month – ahead of a decision expected tomorrow.

Three city councillors representing each party joined The Argus to discuss and debate their proposals for Brighton and Hove.

Councillor David Gibson, joint deputy chairman on the policy and resources committee represented the Green group, who are currently in charge of the council.

He was joined by Councillor Daniel Yates, deputy leader of Brighton and Hove’s Labour group and councillor Joe Miller, the finance spokesman for the Conservatives.

The Greens' budget has been touted as one that “focuses on survival” after an unprecedented year put immense strain on all areas of the city economy.

The £830 million plans would see your council tax rise by about five per cent.  However, the council says, the plans mean the poorest people in the city would have tax cut by 82 per cent.

The councillors were asked whether the planned increase in council tax was necessary, whether Brighton and Hove residents are getting value for money and whether it goes far enough to protect the city’s economy.
