The M23 has been closed for more than eight hours after a pedestrian died in an early hours crash.

Police were called to the M23, between junction 8 and 9 near Gatwick, at about 1am following reports of a collision between a pedestrian, a van and a lorry at 1am.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The M23 remains partially closed as police carry out accident investigation work.

Surrey Police are now urging anyone with information on the circumstances surrounding the collision to contact them.

Sergeant Dan Pascoe said “The circumstances behind this collision are unclear at the moment so we are appealing to anyone who was driving along the M23 between 12.30am and 1.30am to get in touch if they have any useful dashcam footage.

"If you think you are able to assist the investigation, please contact us through the 'Live Chat' function on the Surrey Police web page, quoting reference PR/P21039737. You can also contact us by calling 101."

There is slow traffic in the area surrounding the site of the crash as a result of the ongoing road closure.

Diversions are in place.

A Highways England spokesman said: "The M23 in Surrey is closed southbound between Junction 8 and Junction 9 near Gatwick Airport due to a police-led incident.

"Surrey Police investigation works are being carried out. The closure is likely to remain in place throughout this morning.

"Road-users are advised to follow the hollow yellow diamond diversion symbol and exit the M25 at Junction 6 (Godstone) on to the south bound carriageway of the A22 where it will continue until the junction with the A264 at Felbridge.

"Turn west on to the A264 and travel on this until J10 of the M23 where road users can resume their journey."

Update:

At 10.24am, a Highways England spokesman confirmed that the road has now been reopened and all lanes are running.
